今日のテーマは先週に引き続き、野球です。スポーツ用語はそのまま英語でしょう、と安心してはいられません。ネーティブには全く通じない和製英語がこのでも多いようです。 In this series, we introduce the proper use of loan words in English. Today, we’ll go over words related to baseball again.

皆さん、今日の野球用語は和製英語だと知っていましたか? Hey, did you know that these baseball terms were Japanglish and not real English?

avatar プチクレア:

Those japanglish lessons are great ! I didn’t know so many English-sounding words were actually made up…

avatar Sindy RC:

EP101!

Thank you for this Japanglish lessons! I want to take the opportunity to congratulate NY Giants (NFL) for their victory. :kokoro:

Anyone saw the commercial? I guess someone was inspired  S_R_C

avatar maxiewawa:

I didn’t actually know these baseball terms!

I learnt a bit about baseball today. Now I can watch the superbowl and know what’s going on.

avatar Yuki:

These lessons are great!

Now I’m starting to doubt all English-sounding words in the Japanese language!!!

avatar Cory:

プチクレア>
Yep, the Japanese language is filled with interesting English-sounding words. :)
By the way, when I first heard the word trauma, I thought that was Japanese….

Sindy>
Woot! way to go Giants.

maxiewawa>
lol lol

Yuki>
Yeah, it is really tempting to use the English-sounding words in English conversation, isn’t it? One should be careful, with words such as “mansion”…

avatar Sachiko:

Hey everyone,

Thanks for your comments. Yup. I understand that feeling. I’m starting to doubt every word I come across, too!
But researching the origins of these words is always interesting. Keep up the good work, everyone!

avatar Christopher Hart (KC8UFV):

Max - I don’t think these terms will help you with the Super Bowl much, as it’s football, and this lesson is on baseball.

Occasionally, a pitcher will strategically walk a batter if (s)he determines it will actually reduce the number of runs scored, by only giving them 1st base, instead of allowing the other runners to make it home. This is not normally done with the bases loaded, or when it will result in the bases being loaded, as it is setting the hitting team up for a grand slam.

 I’m a bit late with my response, but never mind.
I love baseball, even if it’s not a major sport in Holland. But we do have a national team and an international ‘Haarlemse Honkbalweek’ every other year. Teams (non-professionals) from all over the world will come and play, like from the US, Cuba, Korea, Japan, Italy.
I love to watch the differences in playing between these countries.
With America, and certainly Cuba, often it will be pure strength. (I remember one game between Holland and Cuba, where Cuba hit 16 homeruns, although this may have something to do with our then long-time standing problem of finding a good pitcher^_^)
With the Asian teams, what strikes me most is the speed. It’s completely different.
Where Europe is concerned, Italy and Holland are the two leading countries, fairly equal in strength, so that always makes for interesting games!

In Dutch, the term for ‘hit by a pitch’ is ‘geraakt werper’, which translates into English as ‘hit by the pitcher’.
so I think between our three countries, we’ve got all possibilities covered.

I love listening to these baseball conversations!
