今日のテーマは洋服。「洋服」とは文字通り、「西洋の服」なので、当然単語も英語のままだと思いたいところですが、実は和製英語が多いのです。

日本にいた時にショッピングしたかったけど、ヨーロッパに比べてサイズが小さいですから私が太っている感じがしたのです。 
Not very pleasant… so I went to buy a bag instead…

Is ’short pants’ used to mean work-style trousers that only come down to the knee? I remember a line in The Simpsons when the postman says ‘can you believe I get paid to wear short pants?’.
イギリスでは”pantyhose”の代わりに”tights”, “nylons”をよく使われます。そして、”there’s a run in my stockings”の代わりに”there’s a ladder in my stockings”と言ってもいいんです。でも、僕はあまり使いません

私は日本でも背が小さい方なので、アメリカではいつもキッズサイズを買っていました 
日本もアメリカも服を買っていると店員さんが寄ってきて話しかけてきますが、アメリカの方が自然な感じで買い物しやすかったような気がします。試着室も広いし、試着もしやすかったのを覚えています。

Javitzy, yes, we use the word “nylons” in the US, too.
“Tights” we use to refer to the thicker pantyhose we wear in the winter…
And about sizes. Yeah, big differences, eh?
I think Japanese women typically find it difficult to find their sizes in the US. Metropolitan areas have smaller sizes though. In New York, it wasn’t too difficult to find size 2 clothing.
ニューヨークなど大都市に行くと、小さいサイズも結構ありますよね。しかも、売れ残るケースが多いので、ＧＡＰなどで、よくセールで小さいサイズを買っていました。ショッピングは色々苦労しますね！

For the sizes in America, perhaps this can shed some light on the problem:
“Only in America……can a pizza get to your house faster than an ambulance.”
Stockings can refer to pantyhose as well as a type of sock. It’s usually the nylon material that is important for stockings.

When I went to Thai, most of the T-shirts there were like muscle-T’s for me. Good thing that I was lifting weights back then.

You are spot on about the definition of short-pants. “Short-pants” are pants that come down (around) to your knees. It is not necessary work-style though.
“There’s a ladder in my stocking”? lol I wonder why you don’t use that phrase that much…. Hmmm….
Oh yeah, I made the mistake of using the word “suspenders” to refer to “braces” when I was in UK.

そうですよね。アメリカのサイズは日本と比べてかなり大きいですよね。私の知り合いでも、アメリカでは大人なのに「キッズサイズ」の服を買っている方がいます。日本では考えられないはなしですよね。
試着室の大きさも違うんですね！興味深いですね。

Berin Loritschさん＞え！救急車よりピザの配達の方が早いってことですか？？！だから太ってるってことですか？太さの話をすれば・・・日本人もかなり、天ぷらとか油っこいもの食べてるので、やっぱり、もともとの体の造りというものもありますよね。お酒の量も日本人とドイツ人とか比べたら比べ物にならないし、やっぱり、体質もあるんでしょうか。アメリカにも、拒食症とか、過食症とかありますか？ちなみに英語では何と言いますか？

洋服に関するテーマを取り上げていただいて、ありがとうございます！！今回のレッスンの中で、実際にまちがって使っていたものが何個かありました…とっても興味深いですね！
僕の外国人の友人は、日本に、あうサイズがないといって、とても苦労しているようでした。。やはり体のサイズが基本的にまったくちがうんですね。逆に僕は、海外で気に入った服があったとしても、おおきすぎてサイズがない…なんてことはしょっちゅうです

そうですよね。
日本の居酒屋って油っこいものとかがありますが、日本ではそれほど肥満が社会問題となっていませんね。
Eating disorder (摂食障害)はアメリカにもあり、特にティーンの間で問題ですよね。拒食症はanorexia, 過食症はbinge eatingですね。神経性大食症（一気にものを食べ、そに対する代償行為を行う摂食障害）はBulimia nervosa、一般的にBulimiaと呼ばれていますね。

案外人種によって体の造りが違うんですよね。海外に住んでいると、母国からお取り寄せしなくてはならない！という場面に色々遭遇するんですよね。洋服だけではなく、頭痛薬といった薬も、日本と海外だと強さが違うんですよね。
