今日のテーマは、高齢化社会。日本語では高齢者に関する用語で、シルバーという言葉を良く使いますが、英語でもそうなのでしょうか。英語圏では高齢を象徴する色はあるのでしょうか。早速聞いてみましょう。

私も心がけていることですが、
もっと電車の中で高齢者の方に席を譲りたいですよね。
うちの父も歩くだけでひざが痛いので、電車で少し座れるかどうかで
その日の体調が違いますから。

We also have reserved seats for aged people, pregnant women and disabled people. On the other hand discounts for aged people aren’t very common : mostly in public transportation, and only after 65 years old. But I think the perception of “aged” is changing. There are lots of new entertainment industries geared toward the senior citizens, and with healthcare progress I rarely consider people under 70 or 75 as aged…

電車などでよく思うのが、中年の人が「最近の若いもんは・・・」と言うほど若い人のマナーはみんな悪いわけではないということです。逆に、若い人のほうが、お年寄りに席を譲っている姿をよく見ます。それに、中年の人たちが我先にと割り込んで座ろうと姿も多々見かけます。人の振り見て我が振り直せとはこのことですね 
ちなみに私も祖父母がいますので、高齢者の方が荷物などを持っているとついつい声をかけたくなります。最近は物騒なので、素直にありがとうと他人を信用するお年よりも必然的に少なくなり、何だか寂しいですね。お年寄りが安心して暮らしていける、reserved seatがなくてもいいような譲り合いの環境を作っていきたいですね。
