I had a good experience with a security guard in Paris.

I was pick pocketed at a clothing store and noticed right away. The security guard was the only person there who spoke English so he told me how to get to the nearest police station. When I got there, the guard had told the police that they found my wallet in the store (without the cash, unfortunately). He even called my hotel to leave a message. He was so nice! That made my day!

Not really, no. But then again I know that security guards aren't so keen on drinking and eating in museums...

I once got stopped in a bookshop (I wasn't in Paris) because on my way out I pulled out a travel guide (which I had bought elsewhere) and I had completely forgotten to show it to the guard on my way in... I just wanted to check where I should go after, but I had to explain that I had bought it in Paris a week ago, that I hadn't stolen it from the bookshop, and that as it was I was visiting the bookshop because it was mentioned in the guide as a place of interest. I was with a Slovak friend who didn't speak french, had no idea what was going on, and the security guard wasn't very friendly...

I never went back to that particular shop...
