I guess the first step is sorting the garbage to allow recycling, ie not mixing glass, paper, plastic, etc… the only problem being that sorting takes a lot of space (much more than time !) and having multiple trash can in a small appartment isn’t easy.
On a different subject, it has become very fashionable to carry reusable tote bags when you go shopping, instead of getting plastic bags at the register. I know that some countries use paper bags too, but I have never seen those in supermarkets in France, and even in open air markets I haven’t seen them in a long time. My mom used to have reusable tote bags years ago, when every body went for the plastic ones, and I thought it was so uncool… Now I can say she was cutting-edge all along !

I took Eric’s “now or never” to heart. I bought a really cute Hello Kitty tote bag. 
I use it every time I go shopping now.
