ところで、”ゲズンドハイト” ドイツのphraseはおなじです。
“GESUNDHEIT” (GE-ZUND-HAIT, try not to say “zundo” or “haito”)
Personally, I don’t like to say “bless you” because the long version of it is “god bless you”, and since I’m not religious, I don’t want to seem like I am.
I do think this is a weird thing to say, and I do not see the point. But when most americans sneeze (ハクション）they want someone to say “bless you/gezundheit”.
I heard the origin of this phrase comes from the middle ages in England (during the black plague). People thought that when they sneeze, their soul is escaping, so they thought if they say “god bless you” then god will put it back in their body…..not sure if that is true, but sounds likely

In Japanese, we have to say “ごしゅうしょうさまです”
