The only quality family time you have is around the breakfast table. You have all agreed to speak English during this time to ease your way into the Canadian society. Every morning, you say, “Good morning,” in English, and everyone replies in English. You then speak about your plans for the day and what time you will return home to grab a bite to eat, finish some last-minute errands, and go to sleep, before starting the cycle all over again. But as you sit down at the table this morning, it seems you and your father are the only ones who have made it. You ask in English, “Where’s mom?” He answers in English, “She is brushing her teeth and washing her face.” You are starving and really wish everyone would hurry up. You ask your father in English, “Where is my little brother this morning?” In an annoyed tone, he answers in English, “He is still in his bed waking up.” Nice. You stare at your father for just a moment, trying to convey how hungry you are in your stare. Finally, he tells you in English, “Oh go ahead! Eat breakfast!” Looks like you have broken this daily routine!

As you get closer, you see a English storeowner and a teenage boy screaming loudly at each other! The storeowner is very angry and throws his arms around in fury. You look around you for answers from the crowd…no one is helping in any way. Crying, the teenager sits at a nearby bench, moping. Check out the whale gliding in the water!” Rushing over to the side of the boat, you see the most exciting sight you have ever seen! You ask your friend in English, “How do you say ‘whale’ in English again?” He repeats the word and then hands you a scuba suit. Looking terrified, he laughs and assures you he will not let anything happen to you but that you HAVE to see what is under the water! And he was right! When you climb back on the boat later, you have so many questions! And the worst part is that you have no idea how to say any of the amazing creatures you saw swimming under the water in English. He believes this is a great way to see the country while relaxing and unwinding for the day. But you have a trick up your sleeve this time. Last time, he embarrassed you by continuously rolling his eyes at you every time you didn’t know the English word for an animal. This time, knowing the agenda ahead of time, you prepared. As you saddle up and head out over the hills, you spot some vultures in the trees. Seizing an opportunity, you call out in English, “Look, those vultures are eyeing that cheetah’s lunch!” Surprised, he looks at YOU and not the vulture. Acting as if you don’t notice, and not missing a beat, you call out in English, “Ooh, hurry! That quail is about to fly away!” Still looking shocked, he decides to try to trick you. He looks around and calls out in English, “Those ducks, they are bobbing in the water.” Calmly, you reply in English, “Yes, there are a few in the water and few over there on the grass too.” Finally you smile, rolling your eyes, and tell him in English, “I guess birds of a feather flock together. You didn’t think I was going to come unprepared again, did you?”
