Learn English with EnglishPod101.com! Today your friend in America has a special treat for you. He is taking you out on horseback to see some of the country up close! You have absolutely no idea what to expect, but you could not be more excited either!! Your friend hands you a saddle and explains in English, “Saddle up, your horse is running there in that field.” Confused, you just stare at him. He laughs and points into the field and repeats the command in English, rolling his eyes at you. Embarrassed, you saddle up and head out as soon as the sun peeks up over the horizon. Within minutes, your friend quietly exclaims in English, “Be really still! Look, across that field…the deer are running and jumping…and the wolves over there are looking for food!” You strain your eyes trying to make out the images in the silvery sunlight, as if you knew what you were looking for. Again, he looks at you rolling his eyes and repeats what he said in English. Only this time, he adds, “I thought you said you learned English before you came here!” You snap back in English, “How was I supposed to know I was going to need to talk about animals in English?” Rolling his eyes once more and laughing, he replies in language, “This IS a vacation…isn’t it??”

Learn English with EnglishPod101.com! You learned a lot the last time you agreed to watch your niece…and this time, the joke’s on her. Yes, last time, she thought she was so smart because she knew the English names for so many insects in your garden. But she is only five years old, and you are pretty sure that you have her this time! You have a bug day planned – of gardening again. She loves it, and it is an excellent chance for you to show off your new English insect vocabulary that you have been practicing. As you follow her out into the flower garden, she looks back at you with those big patronizingly sweet eyes and says in English, “Look, what is this bug called?” Oh, she’s fast: she thinks you don’t know this answer. You kneel down next to her, sneer on your face, and reply sweetly in English, “Honey, that is a spider, and it looks like it’s protecting itself from you.” Astonished, she whips her head around to face you and replies with a simple, “Oh.” You point to another bug nearby and explain in English, “And look here, the cicadas are climbing up the tree.” She stares at you in disbelief and replies in English, “I don’t want to look at bugs any more, let’s go work in the garden!” Looks like you beat her at her own game AND get some help with that unruly garden too! Nice job!

Learn English with EnglishPod101.com! You are sitting in your class at the university in America today, and your professor promises a special challenge. You must admit, you are a little nervous. In the past, ’special challenge’ has meant anything from pop-quizzes to his grandmother’s secret recipe…blech, now THAT was a challenge! As your professor approaches the podium, he starts up the projector and begins showing slides of what appears to be animals from Australia. You are thoroughly confused now. He explains in English, “Your test results on the last exam were so bad that I decided I would give you an easy bonus grade. For each of these animals that you can name in English, I will give you five points on your exam…and believe me, you ALL need it!” With that, the class erupts into applause…but not you. You learned the names for common pets in America and even the English names of common zoo animals. But you NEVER thought about learning how to say ‘platypus’ or ‘kangaroo’ in English. Well, you’ll know when you retake his class next semester…
